Training Opportunity: Free for students interested in an Emergency Service Career

A hazardous materials (HAZMAT) First Responder at the Operations level (FRO) responds to hazardous materials incidents in a defensive fashion within existing resources and capabilities to contain the release from a safe distance, to keep it from spreading and to prevent nearby persons, property or the environment. Each participant who successfully completes this course is issued a state certificate from CSTI.

This course also complies with the training requirements for First Responders Operations under Fed-OSHA, Cal-OSHA, and NFPA 472.

Course Objectives:

  • Recognize a HazMat event through basic clues.
  • Describe basic first responder actions, citing nee for safety, isolating/deny entry, and making required notifications to begin a safe and effective response to a HazMat incident.
  • Recognize what hazarous materials are, the problems they pose, risks, and outcomes HazMat events present.
  • Identify the HazMat First Responder Awareness vs. Operations Role and the limits for both roles.
