Good Afternoon Mission College
I am pleased to announce that Rob Johnstone will be coming to our campus on Thursday August 23, 2018. He will be delivering an address to the college at 11AM, followed by lunch, and a chance to discuss guided pathways with Dr. Johnstone from around 1PM-2PM (as he will help foster a campus discussion). The events will take place in Gillmor Center 103 (and overflow in 107).
On a personal note, I have had the chance to see Dr. Johnston speak (on two occasions) about Equity and Guided Pathways. I found him to be genuine and quite inspiring. In many ways, he encapsulates our why- as in, why we are here working at a California Community College. I hope you will be able to join us! This event is for the entire Mission College Campus and will be of use to anyone who is ready to be part of the next step in moving our college forward. Faculty who attend will be able to earn 2 hours of All College Day (FLEX) credit. More details will be forthcoming, including the chance to RSVP for lunch.
Dr. Rob Johnstone currently serves as the Project Lead for the California Guided Pathways Project and is the Founder and President of the National Center for Inquiry and Improvement. He works to help two- and four-year colleges create structures and processes that increase student completion, learning, and labor market outcomes. His unique and engaging approach to inquiry and improvement fuses the world of foundations, initiatives, and system-level policy changes with the ground-level work of college practitioners and college senior leaders. Rob has worked on the ground with more than 350 colleges around the country both directly and on initiatives such as the American Association of Community Colleges Pathways Institutes, the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the California Guided Pathways Initiative, NCII’s A2I2 Cohort Model, Jobs for the Future’s work with the statewide centers in the national Student Success Center Network, Gates’ Completion by Design, Lumina’s Beyond Financial Aid, and a variety of state-level and local college projects. Rob served as a director, dean, and provost in the California community college system for more than a decade, and he worked as a strategic consultant in industry prior to shifting to higher education. With more than 25 years of consulting experience in industry and higher education, he has a unique dual perspective on this work. Most importantly, he brings an energy and passion to improving lives and communities through a social justice and equity lens.
