District Police Discussion on AB 481 / Military Equipment

West Valley - Mission College District Police invite the public to an upcoming virtual meeting on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. During this meeting, Chief of Police Chris Rolen will provide an overview of Assembly Bill 481. There will also be an opportunity for the campus community to ask questions and provide input. 

Background 

On September 30, 2021, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of eight (8) policing reform legislation including AB 481 which created Government Code Section 7070, et seq., use of military equipment by California law enforcement agencies. AB 481 seeks to provide transparency, oversight, and an opportunity for meaningful public input on decisions regarding whether and how military equipment is funded, acquired, or used.

3 - Virtual Community Meeting on June 1, 2022 to include:

  • Purpose of the new legislation
  • Definition of military equipment
  • WVMPD's military equipment inventory
  • WVMPD's proposed equipment funding, acquisition and use policy
  • Pending annual report requirement
  • Community engagement and public access to materials 

Feedback from each of the above meetings will be incorporated into the Report to the District Board of Trustees. This item will be considered by the District Board of Trustees at the June 21, 2022 meeting. Complete agenda packets with back-up information will be available beginning the Friday before the Tuesday Board meeting.
