Skarlette Smillie is a dual enrollment student here at Mission College and a student at Mission Early College High school (MECHS). At MECHS she is the Black Student Union (BSU) president and the ASB community service commissioner. She is pursuing her degree in political science and then will attend law school with a focus in discrimination law. By combining her passion for politics and photography, she was able to bring you a gallery walk that celebrates the diversity of hair that the Crown Act protects.
About the exhibit:
On July 3, 2019, California was the first to pass the Crown Act. As the BSU president, Skarlette created an event based on the Crown Act. This event is a gallery walk of photos that she has taken of black people’s hair within the community to represent the Crown Act that has been implemented in 12 states. Through the images in the gallery, the significance of the Crown Act itself and how the diversity of hair should be welcomed in all places will be expressed.
